Upgrading your website’s theme to the latest version is highly recommended, because it ensures you have all the latest features and the latest bug fixes. In this article, I’ll show you 3 different ways how to update Startuply theme without losing customization.
Startuply comes with the ability to update via 3 different methods. You can use the Envato Market Plugin and get update notifications in your dashboard or you can update manually via FTP/Dashboard if you have a .zip archive with theme. Zip archive is usually obtained directly from customer support (if you reported the bug in theme and we fixed it) or from ThemeForest dashboard.

1. Automatic Update
Normally when you see a notice in your admin navbar that you have an update you can go to Dashboard » Updates and all you have to do is confirm the update to a WordPress.org theme or plugin, or to your core WordPress installation. Easy right? Well with the Envato Market plugin updating all of the premium themes and plugins you’ve purchased from Themeforest and Codecanyon can be just as easy.
The first step is to sync the Envato Market plugin with your Envato account to have access to all of your marketplace purchases as well as item updates.
To get started click on the Envato Market link in your dashboard menu. You should see a screen similar to the one above. The very first step is to create an Envato API token. To do this, click on the generate a personal token link (highlighted in red above).
On this screen you can see what the Envato Market plugin is requesting permission to access via your Envato account (Envato sites, the ability to download your items, a list of your purchases and verification of your purchases).
To proceed give your token a name, check the box that you have read and agree to the terms and then click the green button to create your token.
Once your token is created you will see a green success screen. Copy your token code (this is very important since Envato doesn’t store a copy of the token for you), check to confirm that you’ve copied it and click the white button that you got it.
Once your token is saved and validated your page will refresh to show your Envato Market landing page with added tabs for your items. The added tab(s) display all of your theme and plugin purchases as well as their version numbers and quick links to the theme and author pages.

2. Manual Update via WP Dashboard
Start by downloading the .zip file of the theme that you purchased from us.
Next login to your WordPress admin area and click on Appearance » Themes.
Here, you will see all the themes you have currently installed in your application. If Startuply is currently active, then will be needed to temporarily switch to any other theme. Because WordPress is not allowing to delete active themes.
Once you switched to another theme, you will be able to delete Startuply. Click on the "Theme Details" and you will see "Delete" link in the bottom right corner (Note: DO NOT delete the child theme).
After deleting, click on the Add New button at the top.
On the next screen, click on the Upload Theme button at the top. You will be prompted to choose the zip file that you downloaded earlier. Select the file and click Install Now.
Once your theme is installed, you will see a success message along with the link to activate and preview the theme.
3. Manual Update Using FTP
Why do you need FTP? You need FTP to be able to manually upload files in WordPress that sometimes won’t work due to an error on your site. Normally, you don’t need FTP to upload files at all. You can easily upload plugins or themes from WordPress admin area.
First thing you need to do is connect to your server using an FTP client. Go to
/wp-content/themes/ and download your theme folder to your computer.
You should now have a copy of your old theme on your computer. Feel free to delete "startuply" directory on your server (your posts and customizations won't be affected).
Remember you must unzip the folders before you upload a theme using FTP. Then simply right click on your theme’s folder and select "Upload". Your FTP client will start uploading files from your PC to your web hosting server.
Once you have updated the theme, don't forget to go to your admin area and click on Startuply » Theme Options. Then re-save theme settings.
That’s all. You have successfully updated your WordPress theme. Visit your website to make sure that everything is working as expected.
Woah... now I see only the white screen, my website's broken!
First of all, don't panic! It might be the conflict with one of the plugins or some of the requirements are not met. Connect to the server using FTP client and rename Startuply folder to something else, for example "startuply_backup". WordPress will automatically revert back to default theme and your access to dashboard will be restored. Try to disable some of your plugins and then activate Startuply again, it might help.
